Hi, I’m Travis Schefcik (shef-sik), and I write the Uncommon Wellness blog to give you people just like you CrossFit and Paleo diet advice and tips. I started Uncommon Wellness in 2010 because wellness just isn’t common anymore.
Before starting Uncommon Wellness, I’ve spent over sixteen years training in Thai boxing, Shotokan Karate, Japanese and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and many more years doing body-building style weight lifting, running, and brawled with how to eat healthy.
I uncovered CrossFit while deployed to northern Iraq on May 22, 2008. Two weeks later, I attacked my first Workout of the Day (WOD), and it laughed as I floundered around on the ground gasping for air. We continue to battle, the WODs and I, but I refuse to take the beating lying down. I haven’t stopped CrossFitting since my first WOD.
As soon as I knew the dates for my return to the U.S., I signed up for the Level 1 Trainer certification in Virginia Beach, VA. It was risky to signup before I departed Iraq because the troop return dates change, a lot. But I didn’t care, I had to go.
The CrossFit Level 1 Trainer’s course rocked. I met Pat Sherwood, Jon Gilson from againfaster.com (thanks for the free t-shirt Jon!), and a few other very good trainers. I learned a ton, laughed a lot, and met some of the most driven people I had ever encountered.
“You look so thin, but strong . . .weird,” said a close friend with his eyebrows pushed together. I knew I was on to something.
Paleo nutrition propelled my performance farther than I ever considered possible, and has handed me much more than good food. Heart burn, gone. Long recovery times, gone. Energy slumps, gone. Love handles, gone.
