There are more than 7 ways to succeed at CrossFit, but these are my top 7 ways for beginners to succeed.
The exercises that comprise the fundamental movements are paramount to your success with CrossFit. I’m talking everything from the 9 fundamental movements to how to do pushups, kettle bell swings, even box jumps, etc. Becoming a fundamental movement expert means you’ll be doing the exercises properly, and most of all, safely.
Add weight only after you’ve fully grasped the fundamental movements. Keep the PVC pipe or dowel in your hands until you have the basics of the movements locked down, and then incrementally add weight in small amounts. Many people add weight too fast, gets discouraged, quits CrossFit, or worse, they hurt themselves.
Watch videos of CrossFitters performing the movements. I recommend watching the videos on CrossFit.com. CrossFit.com has a vault of demo videos for nearly every exercise. Watch the videos, re-watch them, then re-watch them, and watch them again. The videos will give a visual reference for the exercises, and they get you jazzed before a WOD. One note of caution about videos: Some videos make the movements look easy, but understand there is more than meets the eye. But, since you’re working toward becoming a fundamental movement expert, you already know that.
Videoing yourself performing the movements isn’t being conceited if you’re trying to correct your form (If you want to be showy, forget CrossFit, go to a Globo-gym and do arm curls in front of the mirror). While reviewing your video try not to get into paralyses by analysis. Pick one error and correct it.
The journal is a must if you’re serious about CrossFit. It’s stuffed with both general and detailed information on the exercises, nutrition, all things CrossFit. You won’t regret it. Click here to subscribe.
CrossFit Affiliate blogs are a great source of information. Watch the videos, read the articles, and take the advice they post. It benefits you to get another coaches perspective on things. I guarantee if you read affiliates blogs, you’ll learn something.
Sounds logical, right? If you’re in a location that has a CrossFit box, join it. Though many box gyms are popping up around the country, some areas still don’t have a CrossFit box to join. And if no CrossFit boxes exist in your area, schedule yourself for a Level 1 Trainer Course, and get affiliated! This one screams opportunity!
